The paper presents a simple piping network as it appears in several commercial software tools. The data formats available for communicating with these tools are discussed in order to define strategies for interacting with a library management system (LMS). The authors show how a simple and inexpensive library can be constructed to support all representations of the simple piping network.
A high level introduction to ISO 13584, Parts Libraries, is then presented with emphasis on the key concepts of this new international standard which apply to managing parts libraries in large enterprises with many diverse applications. The ISO 13584 concept of library management systems (LMS), parts suppliers, end users, and library integrators are explained as they relate to the simple library developed at the beginning of the paper.
The paper concludes by showing the cost savings available to enterprises which deploy parts library technology.
