Success
To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children;
to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends;
to appreciate beauty, to find the best in others; to leave the world a bit better,
whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition;
to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived.
This is to have succeeded.
-- Ralph Waldo Emerson

Winnipeg has great theatre, ballet, and classical music events throughout the year. My other main reprieve from the world of academics is fiction reading.
Barney's Version by Mordecai Richler
Currently, I am in between reading selection.
Larry's Party by Carol Shields, a Winnipeg writer
A very good read . This is story is about the life of Larry Weller. Larry is a realistic and
dynamic character. Larry's life (the plot) is not especially extraordinary. But the telling of Larry's
life is extraordinary. The descriptions of the characters' interactions, thoughts, and feelings are
natural, insightful, and humourous at times. This is the first Carol Shields' book I have read. It will
not be the last.
The Magician's Nephew by C. S. Lewis
This is a story of two children's magical adventures and how the land of Narnia came to be. It
was very good, and I think that kids would love it.
My Summer of Amazing Luck by Miriam Toews
This was a hilariously, good read, and it is Toews first novel. She is another Winnipeg writer.
The Shipping News by E. Annie Proulx
Also, an excellent read, although the beginning of the novel was pretty dark and depressing.
She's Come Undone by Wally Lamb
If you like a protagonist who seems to leap from one awful experience to another, this book is
for you! It is actually a very compelling read, but the constant sorrow can be hard to take.
