Research Initiatives for GIS Applications in
     Planning and Development
Objectives:
To support Geographic Information Systems (GIS) applications in research and development activities in the field of urban planning, rural development, health, environmental and natural resource management.
Eligibility:
 Master and undergraduate level student researchers in Pakistani universities  in the relevant fields. Priority will be given to the researchers who intend to use GIS / Remote Sensing and other computer aided techniques for  analysis.
Research Grants:
"Research Initiatives for GIS Applications in Planning and Development" will be a grant as partially support to the cost of research work and data collection etc. The  excellent research work may also be offered for publication upon completion. Amount of research grant is flexible depending upon the proposed research work and its intended outcomes. Research Grants will be awarded in 2nd International GIS conference to be held in Islamabad in March 2000.
Research Themes for Year 1999:
GIS applications to educational planning, urban and regional planning, facility management, health impact assessment, environmental and natural resource management.
Application Date:
Apply before July 15, 1999 with the application on plain paper and a copy of research proposal with recommendation of their research supervisors to General  Secretary PSGIS. The research supervisors of selected scholars will also be awarded with appreciation certificates.
Center of Excellence for Research and Development:
The 'Research Initiative' activities will be conducted by the  Center of Excellence for Research and Development, Ikhwan Education Complex, Barki, Lahore in collaboration with  Pakistan Society of Geographic Information Systems. The selected research work will also be published at no cost.
For Donors:
For the promotion of research activities related with the application of GIS and Remote Sensing techniques, interested persons can fix donations in the name of their organization or individual. Private organizations may also offer research topics of their interest against these awards within the objectives of this Research Initiative. The name of the perspective donating individuals/ organizations will be properly advertised through electronic and print media from the platform of PSGIS (e.g. WWF Research Award, IIMI Research Award,  Ikhwan Research Award, Farogh e Taleem Research Award etc.). PSGIS will make the process transparent and the cash awards will be directly  handed over to the selected researchers by the donor(s) at the occasion of 2nd Annual GIS Conference to be held in Islamabad, Pakistan ( March 2000) hosted by SUPARCO.
