GENETIC VARIATION OF Azadirachta
excelsa (Jack) Jacobs (SENTANG) POPULATIONS
ABSTRACT
The study of the extent and pattern of genetic
variation of six populations [(manong (Perak), Pokok Sena (Kedah), Sik
(Kedah), FRIM (Selangor), Mercahng (Terengganu) and Sg. Charu (Pahang)]
of Azadirachta excelsa (Jack) Jacobs was carried out sing starch gel electrophoresis.
The analysis on eleven enzyme systems were found to be coded by 25 and
26 loci. The mean of observed heterozygosity ranged from 0.08 to 0.11 and
the percentage of proportion of polymorphic loci varied from 61.54% to
73.08%. Low levels of genetic variability are not according to expectation
as this species is an outcrossed and pollinated by insect. factors such
as selection, mating system, compatition, narrow genetic base and genetic
drift were suggested to explain for the heterozygosities and polymorphism
paradox. The extent of genetic identities ranged from 0.81 to 0.98. The
highest genetic identity is between population Pokok Sena (Kedah) and Sik
(Kedah) while the lowest genetic identity is between population FRIM (Selangor)
and Pokok Sena (Kedah). These populations were clustered into two main
groups based on the dendrogram suggesting that they are closely related
genetically and may share common ancestor. Overall, Perak population seems
to be the most potential to be in any conservation and plantation programmes
based from its genetic variability data.
