The Story of Us
The RARPEG lab group has been going
strong for over 15 years. The lab is spread between two locations on the lush,
expansive campus of Michigan State University.
We belong to the Department of Pharmacology and
Toxicology in the Life Sciences building and the
National Food Safety and Toxicology Center.
The "mother" and "father" of our group are Drs. Patricia E. Ganey and
Robert A. Roth. The
rest of us who compose the group consist of post-docs, graduate students, research
assistants, and undergraduates.
Most of the work done here focuses on
mechanisms of tissue injury
(especially the liver), and the relationship between
inflammation and chemically-induced toxicity. Endotoxin
(lipopolysaccharide) is a staple to many of the studies because of its
production of a pronounced inflammatory response. Some students are
working with dual treatments of endotoxin and drugs such as
allyl
alcohol, monocrotaline, and chlorpromazine to construct a rat
model
of inflammation and tissue injury. Other students are taking a molecular
approach by looking at how the exposure of certain chemicals, such as
polychlorinated
biphenyls (PCBs), affects inflammatory cells. Another study is looking at
the effects of thrombin on liver injury.
