
One glorious and bright day, on January 13, 1913,twenty-two college educated women decided that a change was needed and founded Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., at Howard University, Washington, D.C. The sorority founded on Christian principles is primarily a public service organization committed in helping and improving the black community as a whole.
In 1930, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority was incorporated as a national organization. The record of the incorporation is filed at the Congressional Library in Washington D.C.
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. has been a national and international public service organization for over 80 years, with over 200,000 members in chapters all over the world, including Japan, Africa, Europe, and the Virgin Islands. Since public service has been the main founding purpose, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. has been guided by a five-point thrust focusing on:
