"NOTES FROM MOM"

"JULIE RETURNED HOME WITH MAREN TUESDAY, JULY 28!!!"

Date: Fri, 26 Jun 1998 07:45:59

We've heard from Julie!!!

She called Wednesday morning around 10a.m....which was 7pm in Germany (9hr difference from AZ time). She sounded extremely tired and maybe like she'd had a little too much cultural overload and data input to her brain. :) Gee, I wonder why? Monday night, she decided to stay up late with a girlfriend, here in Payson, so she'd be good and tired and be able to sleep on the plane. Great idea, but she ended up sleeping only about an hour and a half total. She slept about 3 hrs on Monday night, before we got up at 4a.m. and took her to the airport in Phoenix. Her plane left at 8:55a.m.

She did a great job packing. All of HER things were in one suitcase. But she had a smaller one that was packed with groceries!!! Maren had given her a list!!! She wanted fresh baked HOMEMADE chocolate chip cookies. Evidently the flour and butter are different, there....the oven temps are in Celsius and she doesn't convert numbers well :)....they don't have Baking Soda...and their chocolateMAREN - 1996 isn't the same as our chips. SO....Julie made cookies and took them. She also put in her suitcase: a five pound bag of flour, baking soda, baking powder, a two pound bag of brown sugar, muffin cups (Maren has to make muffins for graduation), pecans (she said they were expensive there...hell! they're expensive here! But Maren is dying for pecan pie!), and Mexican spices to make burritos-tacos-enchiladas.

I taught Julie to make homemade flour tortillas, so she could make Navajo Tacos and sopapillas. Luckily, she remembered that she would need OUR kind of flour to make them right. :) Hence, the 5 lb bag. She took lots of recipes, too. Maren also wanted string cheese....but we decided she'd have to wait until she comes here to visit in August.

SO...Julie got off okay. She sat by the window on the 4 1/2 hr trip to JFK airport. There was no one in the middle seat, so she got to spread out a little, and she said the man in the aisle seat kept to himself, so SHE was happy. :) The movie was "The Man In the Iron Mask". She loved it! She had a short layover in NY...about an hour...and then on to Germany. Her seat on the flight overseas was also a window seat, but only two seats together. The man that sat next to her reminded her of Steve's dad. Apparently he and his wife only had enough frequent flyer miles to put one of them in First Class, so he let his wife sit there, while he sat with Julie. Smart guy, eh? She said the movie wasn't quite as good, although everyone else seemed to enjoy it. Maybe she was just exhausted? It was "Wag the Dog".

She arrived in Stuttgart at 7:20a.m. their time. That was 10:30pm our time, on a day when she was up at 4a.m. and only had 3 hrs sleep. So...she was starting her day pooped. During the last month, she spent many hours using a great computer program we have for learning German. She could even speak into the microphone and the computer would tell her if she had good pronunciation. She said it's really helped, already. Sitting around the table, talking to Maren and her parents, she was able to follow along and pick up several words. BUT...Maren has a friend, Sophie-Marie, visiting from Paris, too. Maren and Sophie-Marie speak in French. Julie said THAT really blew her away!!!!!

Apparently they are short of space in Maren's house, so Maren gave Julie HER bed. Maren is sleeping on the floor. :) Maybe when Julie catches up on her sleep, they'll take turns. :)

Well...that catches you up to the point where Maren started emailing the news. She has email access from her school, so apparently she is going over there every morning to send email to us. I'll copy and paste those emails here for you to read. We are going to try to meet for a chat on the computer, tonight.
