Discussing problems
- Always begin with something positive when stating the problem
- Discuss only one problem at a time; that is, be aware of sidetracking
- Use specific behaviors to describe what is bothersome rather than derogatory labels or overgenerations
- Admit one’s own role in the development of the problem
Actions to solve the problems
- Focus on the solutions by brainstorming as many solutions as possible
- Focus on mutuality and compromise by considering solutions that involve change by both partners
- Offer change something in one’s own behavior
- Accept, for a beginning, a change less than an ideal solution
