This is the fictional story of how my life became first a radio series, then an animated TV series. It is a story of legal wrangling, deadlines, success and failure. In fact, its much more exciting than the eventual TV series.
The story starts with my web page, or more specifically "The Cycling Thing" part of my web page which tells the (true) story of my cycling holiday in Ireland. A light-hearted tale of achievement which was discovered by a British radio executive. She thought it would make a great weekday comedy drama, and bought the radio rights. An excellent writer turned my story into the narration an added dramatised conversations in keeping with the spirit of the original story. I was given a credit as consultant and approval at all stages. The series was recorded and broadcast in six episodes.
The radio drama was a moderate success, and brought the story to the attention of a Hollywood producer. His studio bought the film and TV rights and commissioned a script. The first draft was terrible, replacing the gentle banter and humour of the radio series with "American humour". I tried to convince them that it was not acceptable, but unlike the radio series, I had no control. The second draft was an improvement, but by then British based films were out of fashion (Titanic had just beaten The Full Monty at the Oscars). The studio gave up on the film, and passed the script to their TV department, as a movie of the week. As the film went round the committees, it began to change. It eventually went into production as an animated feature, hoping to cash in on the craze started by The Simpsons and South Park.
The TV movie was a success on both sides of the Atlantic, and a TV series was soon being planned. The main character was loosely based on myself, with some of the characters from "The Cycling Thing" and new characters based on my fellow students. At first the stories were taken from actual events in my final year at college.
Despite a good start, the ratings began to drop, and the storylines stopped being based on my life and were based on other TV series and films. The series was nearly cancelled after the first series, but there are plans for at least one TV movie, based on my forthcoming holiday in Tenerife.
A second TV movie may go ahead, as a sequel to the original Cycling Thing. The second series is scheduled to start in September, but with substantial changes to the format. The location has moved to Bath (where I am going to study as a postgrad in real life), and there are all new characters.
