Primus Albums

My favorite album that Primus has ever put out by far is

Frizzle Fry. This was their first, and it is often true of a band's first album that it be their best offering. It is by far the most impressive display of Les Claypool's creativity. I cannot decide which song from this CD is my favorite. I have a hard time trying to decide between "The Toys Go Winding Down," "Harold of the Rocks," Frizzle Fry," and "John the Fisherman."

Soon after Frizzle Fry, the band comes out with a live album called

Suck on This. This album, too impressed me. The arrangement of "John the Fisherman" that opens the album is very cool. It starts out with a hint of Rush which is very significant because Rush influenced Primus in a large way. This album also has a live version of "Tommy the Cat" that lots of people aren't aware of.

Primus next put out an album in which they did a few covers. This album,

called Misc. Debris was very cool. It consisted of several songs that sounded as if Primus should've done them. Pink Floyd's "Have a Cigar" was my favorite on this album.

Primus didn't REALLY get recognized until they put out

Sailing the Seas of Cheese. The song that made Primus known was "Jerry Was a Racecar Driver." This song was so out of the ordinary, that people finally started listening. It was a cool, funky sort of feel that made people feel kind of quirkily groovy inside. This album has so many extremely hip songs. From SGT Baker, to Is It Luck?, to Tommy the Cat, the songs never stopped getting cooler. My favorite from this album is SGT Baker, but how can you really choose?

Next on the list for Primus is

Pork Soda. The chart off of this album that made it big was My Name is Mud." While I must admit, I really got into this song at the early days of this album, I found other songs on the album that were much better. Songs like DMV, Nature Boy, and were much more enjoyable to listen to than My Name is Mud. I guess that song just appealed to the less educated crowd than did the rest.

The only other released album that Primus has put out is

Tales from the Punchbowl. I have to admit that I haven't listened to this album as much as the others. It's not that it isn't good because it shows such a greater level of talent (believe it or not) than all of the other albums. I just can't seem to tear myself away from Frizzle Fry and the others long enough to really get into it. The song that made this album so popular with the general public is "Wynonna's Big Brown Beaver." I really dig listening to this song, but being an avid fan of Primus, I would rather hear their finer works from the earlier albums.
