This organization was founded to promote the establishment and growth of music therapy chapters on the local, regional, and national levels, in support of the American Music Therapy Association for Students. Goals are also to promote music therapy, to communicate professional ideas and needs, to research topics for the benefit of the music therapy profession, to foster professional ideas among music therapy students, to serve as a representative body for music therapy students throughout the Mid-Atlantic Region, and to cooperate with Regional and American Music Therapy Association, Inc. and related professional organizations.
At the present time we know that MARAMTS was founded somewhere in the early 1970's. Nazareth College became a member of MARAMTS in 1978, and therefore as historian we have no information preceding this date. By spring of 1980, 13 schools had joined the organization: Duquesne University, Elizabethtown College, SUNY Fredonia, Howard University, Mansfield University, Marywood University, Montclair State University, Nazareth College, SUNY New Paltz, Radford University, Shenandoah University, Slippery Rock University, and Temple University. With the unification of AAMT and NAMT in 1998, Immaculata College, MCP Hahnemann, Molloy College, and New York University joined MARAMTS.
In reviewing past minutes of meetings and correspondence between schools, it appears that the goals of communication and fund raising have remained prominent throughout this organization's history. Regional Executive Board meetings were held at various locations before settling on the current site of Scranton, PA in 1984.
