Who Am I?
In the spring of 1999 I will be entering the second semester of my sophomore year at the University of Arizona, Tucson, Arizona in the BPA (business and public administration) college. I am working towards a major in Management Information Systems (MIS). The U of A MIS program, dealing with both computers and management, is ranked 3rd in the country.

During my senior year of high school I had the tough decision of choosing between the U of A, the University of Wisconsin with my best friend, and a partial scholarship to Syracuse where my family is. After finding out that I had been awarded a full NROTC scholarship to Arizona, I decided to head west.

My European Background
I was born in Catania, Sicily, on April 30th, 1979 while my parents were assigned to Naval Air Station Sigonella, Sicily. As an infant, I moved to England and lived there for nearly 15 years while my parents tought for the Department of Defense (DoDDS) school system at RAF Bentwaters/Woodbridge and later RAF Upper Heyford/Croughton. I attended British school for my middle school years and then moved back to the DoDDS system for my freshman year at Croughton AHS. My parents were then transferred to sunny Rota, Spain where I lived until leaving for college. While in Rota, I attended David Glasgow Farragut High School for three years and graduated in June of 1997. My sister, Megan, is currently a sophomore at DGF.

Former Life as a Midshipman
For my first three semesters at the U of A I was a midshipman in the school's Naval ROTC unit where I planned on becoming a naval aviator and flying F-14s. I really disliked being a part of NROTC and basically I found the NROTC experience interfering with my studies. Out of the 60+ midshipmen who began the program with me in 97, the number has dwindled to about 10. I'm proud to say that I stuck with it longer than most of my peers.

There is still a selection of cool people out there including Nick Verburgt, Mike Dwan, Cathy Eyrich, Dave Elias, Jeff Franz, Jon Barr, Jeff Miller, Marz Rodriguez, Tico Valenzuela, Ray Jackson, and the others who I've forgotten. Good luck in your careers! Fly Navy! Fly Marines!

My decision to drop the program after being on full scholarship is supported by my good friend JB Jaso's saying that "the benefits just don't outweigh the costs." I'd rather live the real college experience and then go off and get a challenging job and not have to commit myself to 10 years in the service.

Some Interests
Most of my time in college consists of stressing over the zillion and a half things I should be doing and instead end up doing other things to try to forget about them. Top of my list is spending time with my friends and girlfriend at home in my apartment complex. I enjoy chillin and playin N64, running or working out, listening to my stereo, driving my Mustang places, sleeping whenever I get a chance, or fighting my beta fish, Trip. (I know that makes me very popular with animal lovers- it isn't really a hobby). Earlier this semester, Trip mercilessly defeated Rachit's Diablo and Jeremy's Sadhist beta fishes. I am currently training him in Katie's frog tank for an encounter with Chrystal's Angel fish.

As far as music, my favorites are diverse ranging from modern hip hop to old school Billy Joel, Bob Marley, the Doors, and Hendrix. I am a big fan of Madonna! I also like to get my hands on European dance mixes. Some of my favorite songs are "Stir it Up" and "Is This Love" by Bob Marley, "Santeria" by Sublime, "Pianoman" and "Uptown Girl" by Billy Joel, "Bohemian Rhapsody" by the Braids, and "Touch Me" by the Doors. "Caress Me Down" by Sublime is also tops whenever this certain blonde girl I know dances to it...

I don't follow too many sports teams anymore but I am a fan of the Yanks in baseball, the Giants and Vikings in football, the U of A in everything, and in soccer, even though I get a lot of stick for it from my Spanish friends, I am a devoted fan of the England soccer team! Go Shearer and Owen! ˇViva Inglés! I'm also proud to support Manchester United!

My Running Career Thus Far
My first couple years of high school were clouded by stress fractures but I came back to captain the Rota Admirals track team my junior and senior years, unbeaten in the 800m and beaten only once in Gibraltar in the 400m. In my senior year of cross country, I placed 2nd in the Turkey-Spain-Islands district championship and for track in the spring of 1997, my team travelled to Incirlik AB, Turkey, for district championships. There I won 5 golds in the 400m, 800m, 4x400m, 4x800m, and sprint medley... over all Rota swept the field convincingly defeating our wack rivals Incirlik, Ankara, Izmir, and Bahrain. This memorable victory was led by myself, Brion Lentell, Rusty Lauver, and Chris Scott, and the girls were led by my friends Alesha Bowens, Jessica Arnold, and Jennifer Urbieta. I received my high school's Athlete of the Year award shortly after that trip.

My freshman year at the U of A, I trained off and on and dabbled in a few races including a 10k in Yuma, AZ, and the Bixby Knolls 5k in Long Beach, CA, run by my good friend JB Jaso, where I placed 7th out of 212 runners in 18:12. I have also run a few 5k races back home in Rota and completed a triathlon there on June 13th, finishing 6th out of 37 guys. Too bad I'm not a phast cycler! One of my best runs of the year came in my Navy PRT with a 1.5 mile time of 7:47 as part of a 300 score. I am considering trying out for the Wildcat cross country team in August of 99.
