Celebrating Sisterhood

In 1874, the first five women admitted to Colby College sought to create a sisterhood that would support them in a new environment. Their purpose at the outset was that the sorority should become a national organization of college women. Mary Low Carver, Elizabeth Gorham Hoag, Ida May Fuller, Louise Coburn and Frances Mann Hall founded SIGMA KAPPA with the belief that education must encompass not only intellectural challenge, but spiritual and social growth as well. This belief continues to guide SIGMA KAPPA today.

For more than a century, SIGMA KAPPA has been uniting women in lifelong friendship, creating a sisterhood that has encompassed thousands, across generations and around the world. Though each sister's face, dream and goal is unique, the strength of our Sorority lies not in our differences, but in our bond. From Maine to California, from 1874 until today, from sister to sister, together we are all the heart of SIGMA KAPPA.

SIGMA KAPPA is one of our country's most vital women's organizations with more than 105 active college chapters in 40 states and the District of Columbia. More than 115 alumnae chapters keep members in touch with each other and involved in Sorority activities long after graduation.
