THE STARR SCANDAL

A WEB PAGE DEVOTED TO RECORDING FOR POSTERITY THE EVIL DONE BY THE SANCTIMONIOUS, HYPOCRITICAL, FAR-RIGHT EXTREMIST KENNETH STARR.

BOOKS ON THE EVIL OF STARR’S MONOMANIACAL QUEST:

There are growing archives of books devoted to the examination of Starr’s relentless overreaching and hypocrisy.  While it’s doubtful that James Carville’s And the Horse He Rode In On is terribly balanced, the far more brilliant Alan Dershowitz has chimed in with the book Sexual McCarthyism.  Another title is The Hunting Of the President by Gene Lyons.

CHARLES BAKALY:

On July 6, 2000, the news media announced that Charles Bakaly, Starr’s former Starr Scandal spokesman, would be facing criminal prosecution for his leaks while he was Starr’s minion, and could go to trial as soon as the next week.  Reporters and commentators noted the irony that he would be facing trial for criminal contempt, while Clinton only faced trial for civil contempt.  Clinton also owned up to the consequences of his actions, while the sniveling and wormlike Bakaly, is fighting this all-too-just action tooth and nail.  Take it like a man.  You dish out crap, and commit crimes to do it, and then you whimper, “It’s OK!  Clinton, he was a bad, bad man.  A bad, bad, BAD man!”  Not as bad as you and your ilk, Bakaly...Starr...and all the other inhabitants of your lowest circle of Hell.

DAVID BROCK IN GEORGE MAGAZINE:

Writing in George, your favorite magazine and mine, Mr. Brock paints a full picture of the plotting of the Far Right that led to this debacle.  His ending observation?—“[P]ublic discourse has been debased, especially on the right.”  Also:  “James Carville’s lament that you can hear just about anything about Clinton by dragging a $100 bill through an Arkansas trailer park was exactly right.  Sit in the Capitol Bar, in downtown Little Rock, for a few nights, and you can be told that virtually every public figure in the state is a rapacious womanizer and is also gay—including Clinton.  Even Hillary Clinton was not spared this treatment:  One can hear that she was having an affair with Vince Foster and also that she is a lesbian, often from the same lascivious gossips.”  For more:

“KENNETH STARR IS A NIGHTMARE OUT OF KAFKA.”—BOB HERBERT, ESSAYIST IN NEW YORK TIMES.

THE WASHINGTON POST ON STARR’S CHURCH IN MCLEAN:

I had a link to this article, but that is now dead.  You’ll have to look up the October 7, 1998 issue yourself.  Suffice it to say, it appears that, except in its starchiness and moral condemnation, Starr’s church is pretty typical:  it overlays its extremism with a layer of psychobabble, obscuring its conservatism and allowing members like Starr to pat themselves on the back for how they “forgive” sinners.

PHILOSOPHER THOMAS NAGEL’S MAGISTERIAL TAKE:

In the Times Literary Supplement, Thomas Nagel, professor of both Law and Philosophy at New York University

(check out his Web page), offers some of the most intelligent commentary on Starr and the harm he is doing to not only privacy and the political process, but even our political structures.  “The machinery of the law is being used to shred every ordinary boundary between matters of public concern and matters that are the business of no one but the parties involved, in the name of the ostensible value to the nation of getting at The Truth.” . . . “Civilization is a delicate structure that allows wildly different and complex individuals to co-operate peacefully and effectively only if not too much strain is put upon it by the introduction of disruptive private material, to which no collective response is necessary or possible.  Americans who recognize this fact can only look on in shame at the destructive spectacle now being acted out by a group of childish and powerful figures who have never understood it.”

“Another prosecutor would have said that he did not go to law school to become a private Dick, standing out in the cold and looking up at two silhouettes on a window shade.  But Starr, brimming with a dangerous righteousness, plunged in.  He would have wired Lewinsky and sent her into the White House, if he could have.  It is clear he would stop at nothing. * * * Now we now things about the chief executive of the United States we do not know about our best friends—or, in many cases, our own spouses.  Clinton has not merely been exposed as an adulterer, he has been mortified, subjected to an Orwellian intrusion by the gumshoes of the state.  His interior life, virtually his fantasies, have been nailed to a wall for the populace to see.  This is a public evisceration. * * * The answer is that we live in an erea in which the boundary between public and private has been obliterated, in which fame has become synonymous with celebrity, in which personality has replaced ideology and a prosecutor, suffused with zealotry, went where he should not have gone.  This is what concerns me.  Only one of us is president.  But all of us have bedrooms.”—Richard Cohen, The Washington Post, September 13, 1998.

A VILLAGE VOICE ESSAY:

An essay on how the absurd drama in Washington is like some absurd medieval mystery play—supposedly done to enlighten us poor slobs as to correct doctrine, but really only providing transitory gossip and amusement.  And the essentially un-Christian nature of the debacle, and the hypocrisy of the politicos, cannot be forgotten:

WORLD SOCIALIST WEB SITE:

While I don’t espouse socialist views (except to the extent that I think the extreme disparities of income in the United States are a crime and a scandal), this Web site has the right idea about just what is going on in this whole laughable mess.  “The Lewinsky affair has been essentially a dirty tricks operation financed and mounted by reactionary elements.”:

THE STARTLING RESEMBLANCE BETWEEN STARR AND DROOPY THE DOG??!!

You know—Droopy, the star of countless MGM cartoons, the dog referred to some time ago in the Washington Post as “Droopy, the doom-spreading, mush-mouthed bloodhound.”  How appropriate that the resemblance between him and Starr should be so uncanny.  Can’t you just see the whole Tex-Avery scenario, the President, trying to escape, swimming across oceans, flying to the moon, and wherever he gos, there’s Starr, saying in that Droopy monotone, “Excuse me, Mr. President, if we could have a few words with you....”  You must agree the resemblance is startling:
