Detachment Overview:
Assumption

Assumption Detachment - Constructed 1993

The current detachment establishment for Assumption consists of a Sergeant as NCO i/c (non-commisioned officer, in charge), 1 Corporal (Supervisor), 5 Constables (investigators) and 2 office support staff. There have been a large number of officers stationed at Assumption Detachment in the past. It is only since 1995 that the office has had seven officers stationed here at one time. Officers in the past worked out of much smaller facilities and with far fewer officers on staff. In addition to new working facilities, a larger barracks facility was constructed in 1992, which houses all single officers stationed at Assumption.

The Detachment itself is a newly constructed building, having opened in 1993, and is located in the native community of Assumption. The detachment also has a sub/office in the Town of Rainbow Lake, 65 km west of Assumption. One officer lives in Rainbow Lake and is responsible for the sub/office. The remainder of the officers live in Assumption in RCMP supplied housing and work from the main office. All officers are expected to make a 2 year commitment to Assumption Detachment at the time of their transfer, with the exception of the member working in the Rainbow Lake Sub/Office who is expected to commit to a three year term. Experienced members are encouraged to consider a transfer to this office due to the volume and severity of many of the investigations carried out by the officers at Assumption Detachment. This is not always possible and at present there are two constables who have transferred to Assumption Detachment from Depot Division, the RCMP Training Academy in Regina, Sask. Assumption Detachment has traditionally been recognized as one of the busiest RCMP office in Alberta and a strong commitment is expected from any officer accepting a transfer to this office.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Assumption Detachment is responsible for the policing of the following Communities:

**Rainbow Lake - population 1200**
**Assumption - population 1100**
**Zama City - population 400**

The remainder of the Assumption Detachment area falls within the Municipal District of MacKenzie and is sparsely populated at best. High Level Detachment borders Assumption to the east and north, with Manning Detachment to the south. On the west side is the British Columbia border.

Assumption Detachment's efforts to provide a complete policing service are supplemented by officers from the Northern District's support units based in Peace River. The District's Identification Unit, Police Dog Service (PDS), Informatics Section, Air Services, General Investigation Section (GIS), and Highway Patrol compliment the efforts of the members stationed at Assumption and Rainbow Lake.

Part of the job of policing in Alberta involves the enforcement of the various traffic laws in the province. These laws are designed to ensure a smooth flow of traffic on Alberta's highways. Perhaps more important than a smooth flow of traffic is a safe flow of traffic. Motorists in violation of provincial statutes may receive a monetary fine and in some cases, demerit points are assigned to their provincial driving record. On October 1, 1998, the Governnment of the Province of Alberta, increased the monetary penalty assigned to a variety of traffic related offences. One of the fines so affected, was the penalty for failing to wear seatbelts. Police have long supported the position that wearing seatbelt can reduce injury, and possibly save lifes in serious traffic collisions. It is our hope that the increased penalty associated to this infraction will encourage those who are not already in the habit; TO BUCKLE UP.
