Childhood

On April 21, 1926, at 17 Bruton street, London, a baby girl was born to the then Duke and Duchess of York. The baby was christened Elizabeth Alexandra Mary, she was a princess and third in the line of succession to the throne. She was called Her Royal Highness The Princess Elizabeth of York.

At this time the King was Princess Elizabeth's grandfather, HM King George V. His wife was the Queen Consort, HM Queen Mary. The hier to the throne was HRH The Prince Edward, Prince of Wales, the uncle of Princess Elizabeth and her father's brother.

On August 21, 1930, Thier Royal Highnesses, the Duke and Duchess of York had a second child. She was born at Glamis Castle in Scotland, christened Margaret Rose, and called HRH The Princess Margaret of York.

Five minutes to midnight on January 20, 1936, King George V died surrounded by his, wife and sons. The Prince of Wales became King Edward the VII. This made nine year old Princess Elizabeth second in line to the throne.
