Janklow Faces His Own Words
When Janklow was trying to make himself
out to be a hero, he quoted to the paper to reassure parents he was in charge
that he would see that I never would touch another kid in South Dakota. He also
had said that he would keep me under surveillance for however long it took. He
already backed off the surveillance promise. Little did he know he couldn't
keep me from touching another kid in South Dakota because I had one of my own.
It was the same day the Monica Lewinski story broke that Janklow had the chance
to stand by his threat.
Equipped with the
article and a little red haired girl who was not my own and a diaper bag, I
walked into Janklow's reception room, gave the article to Amy, the
receptionist, and said it was time for Janklow to stand by his word.
Things started to
get busy. We sat on the couch and began to play with some toys and just minded
our own business. In about five minutes Janklow storms out and threatened me
with the full power of the office of governor if I did anything to any kids. We
were nose to nose. This went on for about three minutes. Janklow saw I wasn't
afraid of him and I wasn't going to leave. He retreated into his office and
little Red, the little girl, and I stayed in the reception area until closing.
We didn't see
Janklow the rest of the day. He had the psychological evaluation from Lee
Pfeiffer and the FBI file he bragged about, but he refused to do anything. By
that time he knew he had to cover up for Darwin LeBeau and Pfeiffer so he
couldn't do anything but steam himself.
As Red and I made
our way around the Capitol, I noticed a SDHP officer down the hall and Jeffie
Talbot. I felt a little better because perhaps Janklow was going to insure the
safety of the child. But as we walked around the cops were not following us,
they were protecting Janklow and not the least bit interested in the child. I
should have known that coward would risk the safety of a kid to protect
himself.
We spent the rest
of the day in the reception room and left shortly before closing. So Janklow
let a man who he had accused of being a child molester leave with a child in
custody. His tough words were just wind.
