We are going to say to the media you are involved in illegal businesses; we are going to declare you are involved in illegal activities; we are going to start a campaign against you if you persist in your will to dirten the 'good name' and reputation of Minister Gurría
Marco Provencio, spokesman of the Mexican MoF
to congresswoman Dolores Padierna,
as she declared to the media on
December 13th, 1999
As a Minister, José Angel Gurría earns U.$. 10 000 a month. He earns also a pension he granted to himself of U.$. 8500 a month, making a great total of U.$ 222 000 a year. It is interesting that, being Minister of a poor country, he earns more than a Minister of rich countries like the United States, the United Kingdom, or France. But it seems this wasn't enough for him: When he was Minister of Foreign Affairs, at least U.$ 147 000 vanished from his Ministry. On January he was asked by oppositionist congressmen about that money, and the man just doesn't know, or, at least, that's what he says.
Update:
January 18th, 2000
Hundreds of employees of the Ministery of Financy made a demonstration to protest because Minister Gurría hasn't paid them their Christmas bonus, which included a turkey breast for each one of them. The Ministery of Finance is integred by economists and accountants. So... where's the money? If it was used to buy a 30-day bond, they could wait till January 24th. That's commonly named in Mexico "to ride the money".
