The Colfax Police Department serves the City of Colfax, Iowa. We are located in central Iowa on I-80, midway between Des Moines and Newton on the western edge of Jasper County. Our department currently has an authorized strength of 4 full time and 5 part time Iowa Law Enforcement Academy Certified officers. We also have a very active group of 10 Reserve officers. These officers provide a wide variety of services to the community including routine patrol, bicycle patrol and crime prevention. We are also active in County wide narcotic enforcement through our membership in the Jasper-Poweshiek Drug Task Force and the Jasper-Polk Drug Task Force. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

The Colfax Police Department shoulder patch was adopted in 1998. This unique and colorful patch is designed to show what makes Colfax Iowa a special place to live. Featured in the lower left front is the historic Gazebo which sits in Mineral Springs Park. This reminds us of our rich mineral water heritage which once made Colfax a destination for travelers from around the world. Next is a farm tractor which reminds us that we are in the middle of the heartland and that the Iowa farmer is what our economy depends on. Behind the tractor is a train. This reminds us that our community was founded as a result of the railroad being built here. Legend has it that Schuyler Colfax, A member of Abraham Lincolns cabinet was traveling on a train which stopped for water on a bluff overlooking the location of the current site of the City. Colfax looked into the valley and proclaimed that "this would be a fine place to build a town" Next is the blue ribbon of the Skunk River which winds through the scenic Skunk River Valley in which our city sits. Finally there is a rising sun. This represents the bright future that is in store for the community and its residents . Notice to Patch Collectors: Due to the high cost of production and the demand for these patches, we are no longer able to give them away. If you would like one of these unique patches for your collection please send $10.00 and a SASE to the department, Attn: Chief Jon Huggins, and a patch will be sent to you . |
