NOVEMBER 15-18 NEW YORK, NEW YORK The Problem: We live in the richest nation in the world, yet all around us people suffer. In our "booming economy" homelessness and visits to food pantries are on the rise. The ultra rich grow richer, and the working poor can't pay their rent even though we work longer hours than ever before. The minimum wage is worth less than it was in 1972. Bankruptcy and working class debt are at an all-time high. Some of us don't sleep well at night. The Solution: The solution is simple. We must build a movement to fight for all people's basic human rights. Rights to a guranteed living wage, affordable housing, food, helthcare, childcare and education. (See the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.) How do we do this? Through education, documentation of human rights violations and demonstration of our commitment to building a movement to end poverty. Voices
of Illinois Poor People is a grassroots organization
dedicated to building the political, social and economic strength of low
income citizens of the State of Illinois. We believe that poor people have
the right to make our voices heard in the decisions that affect our lives.
Using the 1948
Universal Declaration of Human Rights as an organizing platform, our
mission is to raise public awareness of poverty issues and empower low
income communities, organizations and individuals through education, direct
action and documentation of economic human rights violations.
