**The following is a statement made by Senator candidate incumbent Russ Feingold, after an October 17th debate, wherein his opponent Mark Neumann reacted quite rudely to a question about a Water Political Action Committee (Water PAC). The girl who asked the question did her research, and Mark Neumann claimed that he didn't know about this PAC, wasn't getting money from this PAC and he felt that the girl was a "planted question" by the Russ Feingold campaign. The girl then broke down, demanding an apology. Neumann never apologized, and since the republican campaign has been tarnishing her image, and spreading lies.**
Feingold Speaks out on Neumann's Anti-Apology
Green Bay—U.S. Senator Russ Feingold gave the following statement at the steps of the Court House in Green Bay today in regards to the mistreatment of U.W. River Falls college student Theresa Zirbel:
I am here today to talk about an apology that is needed from Congressman Neumann.
You could say he owes the people of the state of Wisconsin an apology for using primarily negative campaign tactics.
You could say he owes the people of the state an apology for running what most independent observers have called inaccurate or false ads.
Absolutely he owes the people the people of this state an apology for breaking with the long standing Wisconsin tradition of clean government and exploiting every possible campaign loophole to unfairly finance his campaign.
Frankly my campaign can handle all of that, but what we can’t handle is that Congressman Neumann still owes Theresa Zirbel the kind of apology she is yet to receive—a sincere one.
An apology that does not continue to call into question her good name. Why didn’t the Congressman just answer the question at the debate on Friday? At the same debate, when a man from Janesville stood up asked me about my politically unpopular stance of opposing a constitution flag desecration amendment, did I hem and haw and accuse the man of being a plant for Congressman Neumann? No, I answered the question honestly and directly—just as I have done at the 432 listening sessions that I have held in every county, every year since I was elected in 1992.
So I have to ask: What kind of person would treat a young woman this way? What kind of person would use his awesome power as a member of Congress and as a U.S. candidate to attack a young woman’s credibility without any substantiation? The attack by Congressman Neumann on this woman is irresponsible.
Do you want, as your senator, someone who would viciously attack a young woman’s credibility? She has said my campaign had not asked her to ask this question. She has clearly said that she researched this question on her own.
Yet, the Congressman today has issued a release saying that I "callously" used this young woman. I ask people to consider whether they want a US Senator representing them who has spent almost an entire week of this campaign tearing down a young woman and trying to tear down her credibility.
Is this the kind of concern Congressman Neumann has for young people in our state? Why is a multimillion dollar campaign and a multimillion dollar political organization attacking a young woman who simply asked a question she had every right to ask? Why did the Congressman issue an apology to Miss Zirbel on Saturday if he was going to send the Republican party out to attack her on Monday on his behalf?
Well I’m afraid we know the answer to these questions. It’s simple. The congressman doesn’t want to talk much about his record or the incredible and unprecedented abuses of the campaign finance system he has used to run his negative campaign—but what kind of person would seek to destroy this young woman’s name to advance his political goals?
I won’t bother to ask for an apology to me. But I ask that now, Congressman Neumann, you apologize without reservation to Miss Zirbel and without further attacks on her credibility and clear her good name. I ask you to apologize to my constituent.
**I can vouch for this young woman, because by typing in the proper web address (http://www.wisdc.org) I can find out who's getting money, from where they are getting money, and where THOSE people are getting money. It's all too easy, and Neumann knows it. This whole thing is just sickening.
