INTRODUZIONE ALLA "DISCOGRAFIA"
DI W.B. YEATS

Premessa

Nel redigere una "discografia" di W.B. Yeats ci si rende conto immediatamente che la ricerca non può avere alcuna pretesa di completezza poiché troppo vasta è la produzione musicale in cui è stato fatto riferimento -più o meno direttamente- all’opera del poeta di Sligo. Si è dunque ritenuto più opportuno fornire una semplice introduzione limitandosi ad elencare le opere più significative o semplicemente le più note. Nella speranza che gli artisti italiani che hanno tratto ispirazione da Yeats e che non compaiono in questa lista non si offendano.

Canzoni
1. Joni Mitchell, nel suo album "Night Ride Home" ci ha fornito una versione di The Second Coming col titolo "Slouching Towards Bethlehem".
2. I Waterboys hanno cantato The Stolen Child nell’album "Fisherman’s Blues" (1989).
3. Down by the Salley Gardens è presente in diversi LP, ad esempio in "In Concert" dei Clannad (1987), in "At the End of the Day" dei Furey Brothers (1985) e su "Blue Shamrock" di Alec Finn.
4. Alcuni estratti di Easter 1916 sono stati usati come introduzione negli album "I’m Born a Free Man" e "Freedom’s Sons" dei Clancy Brothers.
5. Loreena McKennitt ha eseguito una versione di The Stolen Child nel suo LP "Elemental" (1985) e di The Two Trees su "The Mask and Mirror" (1994).
6. Un bell’arrangiamento di Innisfree è presente nell’album "Invocation" degli Anúna.
7. Una versione di The Host of the Air è presente nell’album "Shadow Hunter" di Davy Spillane.
8. La canzone "Before the World Was Made" presente nell’LP "Too Long in Exile" di Van Morrison è stata adattata su A Woman Young and Old. La sua versione di Crazy Jane On God è inoltre reperibile nel recente album "The Philosopher’s Stone".
9. Il nostro Angelo Branduardi ci ha inoltre fornito un importante lavoro discografico interamente dedicato a Yeats ("Angelo Branduardi Canta Yeats", 1986), che comprende:
The Wild Swans At Coole, The Cap and Bells, The Song of Wandering Aengus, The Cloak, the Boat and the Shoes, To A Child Dancing in the Wind, The Fiddler of Dooney, When You Are Old, An Irish Airman Foresees His Death, Down by the Salley Gardens, Innisfree. Da notare che anche la versione su CD contiene i testi sia in inglese che in italiano.
Sempre per quanto concerne Branduardi, The Fiddler of Dooney è presente anche nell’album "Camminando Camminando".
10. L’LP di Marie O’Neill "An Appointment with W.B. Yeats" (1988) contiene invece versioni di:
A Cradle Song, To A Young Beauty, Coole Park and Ballylee, The Fiddler of Dooney, An Irish Airman Foresees His Death, The Rose of Peace, I Am of Ireland, An Appointment, Red Hanrahan's Song About Ireland, Brown Penny, After Long Silence, Those Dancing Days Are Gone, The Ballad of Moll Magee, Girl's Song, Young Man's Song, Before the World Was Made.
11. "Never to have lived is best: song cycle for soprano and orchestra" di Seóirse Bodley è stato registrato nel 1965 dalla Radio Telefís Éireann.
12. La canzone "Yeats’ Grave" dei Cranberries nell’album "No Need to Argue" (1994) è basata su una rilettura libera di No Second Troy.
13. "The Cloths of Heaven" nell’LP "The Spin" (1991) di Dave Stewart e Barbara Gaskin è stato ispirato a He Wishes for the Cloths of Heaven.
14. "Troy" di Sinead O’Connor è basata su No Second Troy.
15. Infine, last but not least, nell’ultimo LP degli italiani Whisky Trail, intitolato "La dea bianca" (1997) è presente una bella versione di Leda and the Swan e anche la canzone Sister of the Moon è ispirata a W.B. Yeats.

Drammi teatrali
1. "Lennox Robinson presents William Butler Yeats" (1959) comprende scene tratte da Countess Cathleen e da Deirdre.
2. "Music of a Lost Kingdom" contiene canzoni e accompagnamento musicale per le commedie composte da Bill Whelan in occasione dello Yeats International Theatre Festival.
3. "Five One-Act Plays" contiene The Cat and the Moon, The Only Jealousy of Emer, The Pot of Broth, Purgatory e The Words Upon the Window Pane.
4. "Yeats’ Noh Plays" (1965) contiene At the Hawk’s Well,The Dreaming of the Bones,The Cat and the Moon e Resurrection dirette da Barry Cassin e Noel MacMahon con la musica di Gerard Victory.

1. Yeats stesso legge tre sue poesie su "The Cædmon Treasury of Poets Reading Their Own Poetry".
2. Yeats e altri leggono poesie su "The Poems of William Butler Yeats" (1959).
3. "Siobhan McKenna Reading Irish Poetry" (1956) contiene 16 poesie di Yeats.
4. "Helen Hayes, Raymond Massy, Thomas Mitchell" (1955) contiene una selezione di opere di Yeats.
5. Yeats legge Innisfree e Song of the Old Mother su "In Their Own Voices".
6. "Lennox Robinson presents William Butler Yeats" (1959) contiene un LP di poesie.
