RUDOLF WALTER RICHARD HESS (1894 - 1987) WHAT IS REALLY BEHIND HIS STORY ? |
|
SECRET OF PRISONER No. 7 UNSETTLED IN 20th CENTURY - WHAT'S NEXT ? In one of the most startling events of the Second World War, Rudolf Hess, Hitler's deputy Fuhrer, arrived unexpectedly in Scotland in May 1941 after baling out of a Messerschmidt he had personally piloted from Germany. He demanded to see the Marquess of Clydesdale (the future 14th Duke of Hamilton), whom he said he had met at the 1936 Berlin Olympics, and claimed his mission was to seek a peace between Germany and Britain. Prime Minister W. Churchill refused to see Hess, and he was imprisoned for the duration of the war. In 1946 he was sentenced to life imprisonment at the Nuremberg Tribunal and spent the rest of his life in Spandau Military Prison, Berlin. Considerable mystery surrounded the Hess mission from the beginning and conspiracy theories have fluorished ever since. Did Hitler know about it in advantage? Did the British also know of it, and was ir part of a planned operation with elements of Britain's Secret Service actively to undermine Churchill and promote a negotiated peace? What was the true nature of the future Duke of Hamilton's contacts with Hess and other top Nazi circles in Germany? |
