The population of Cyprus consists of a Greek majority and a Turkish minority.
In 1974 the Turkish army occupied north Cyprus. Turkey claims it was on a peace-keeping mission to stop a revolt. Greece claims this was just an excuse.
After peace talks the island was divided DE FACTO into a northern Turkish part on about a
third of the island, and a southern Greek part on about two-thirds of it.
In 1984 the "Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus" was declared, only Turkey recognises it.
Cyprus is a constant cause of dispute between Greece and Turkey, and recent peace talks initated by the USA have ended without results.
