FUTURESAVER OF THE WEEK ENDING 5-2-2009

Better

Desiree Fairooz organized the CODEPINK DC house and facilitated actions on and off the Hill with the DC team. She was a children's librarian and school teacher from Arlington Texas. She waved blood-covered hands at Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice in 2007 and was arrested along with 4 other CODEPINK demonstrators at a House Foreign Relations Committee Hearing. Their message was that the Bush Administration had the blood of Americans and Iraqis on their hands and that they were guilty of war crimes. Desiree says that the Iraq war is based on lies and that young and middle aged people are dying for a lie and that we Americans are responsible for atrocities. She is an admirer of Gandhi's brand of civil disobediance and she believes that each person can make peace. She started cashing in her retirement funds to maintain her protester life style. Her first action was in March 2005 joining other demonstrators in commemerating the second anniversity of the Iraq invasion. In Washington DC she handles reservations and logistics and ensures that visiting members are provided with meals, linens and a witty host, all supplied by benefactors. The Iraq war needs to end to stop the abuse of their women and children. For being smart enough to realize that you do not make peace by waging war, Desiree Fairooz has been named Futuresaver of the Week. Click the links below for more information.
