For over 20 years, Marquette University Debate Institute has offered excellence
to debaters from across the country. MUDI
offers four outstanding programs. Each
is designed to provide the best learning experience possible for participating
debaters. Join this tradition of
excellence!
MUDI programs offer an outstanding faculty of experienced coaches and recent
debaters from a diverse set of backgrounds.
Our faculty accolades range from state champions to national circuit
trophy winners.
Facilities at Marquette include the Memorial Library, Science Library, and Law Library. We are also only three blocks from the Milwaukee Public Library, which is a comprehensive Government Documents Depository. Residents will live in supervised dorms with access to all dorm facilities.
Although
in the city, Marquette University has provided a safe and comfortable
environment for participants. We
have never encountered any safety concerns due to our location.
Students will receive an orientation to the neighborhood and can take
advantage of the MU LIMO student shuttle program, providing safe door-to-door
transportation.
The
Regent program is MUDI’s flagship program.
It is a two-week program designed to enhance the policy debater’s
research, theory and skill. The
program is open to debaters with all levels of experience.
Labs are divided according to experience and skill to maximize learning.
Although this program is the preferred institute of our top debaters,
this program is also best for the beginner.
The
first week of the program covers a healthy dose of theory and research.
In addition to two theory discussions each day, participants will meet in
labs to discuss lectures and strategize their own research.
By the end of the first week, each
lab will have researched, developed and indexed at least one affirmative case,
one disadvantage, and six topicality files.
Advanced labs will do close to twice this plus a few counterplans!
The
second week turns theory into practice. Participants
spend part of the week refining arguments already written and finishing new
arguments started over the weekend. Participants
get access to guest lecturers and higher theory workshops.
In addition, participants compete in at least six debates critiqued by a
host of state and regional debate experts.
Fees:
Commuter $549 (includes
tuition & evidence set)
$700 (including meal plan)
Resident $849 (includes room, food, & evidence set)
The
Scholastic Program is designed to provide a more affordable institute focussing
on the policy debate topic. The
program will closely follow the first week of the Regent’s Program.
However, the Scholastics will focus more in our research facilities in
order to receive the greatest value for their time.
Scholastics will not focus on debate skills, as the schedule does
not allow it. However, they will
receive the evidence compiled by all Scholastic labs as well as Regent labs up
to the end of the Scholastic program.

debater. An incredibly experienced
staff of coaches and former debaters who have achieved success at the state and
national level teach the program. Students
will be divided into labs according to skill.
The curriculum focuses on value debate theory, general topic analysis and
debate skills.
Participants
will research all potential topics for the upcoming season.
One topic will be selected as the practice topic.
Participants will write cases on the selected topic and debate at least
