Presidential items to be seen at convention
By GERRY BRAUN
Some former presidents will attend this summer's Republican
National Convention in spirit only - like Richard Nixon, who
will survey the scene from the side of a salt shaker, and
Chester Arthur, whose stoic visage peers out from a porcelain
shot glass.
Calvin Coolidge will be represented by a thimble, Teddy Roosevelt
by a poker chip and a pack of "Rough Rider" cigarettes, Dwight
and Mamie Eisenhower, all smiles and optimism, will grace a
hand-painted plate.
These and hundreds of other items of presidential memorabilia
are part of a collection that Clairemont High School students
have assembled in the past year, largely by soliciting from
collectors and presidential libraries.
