This is the view from across the Banana river to the west of the launch pad. It is late evening, so the sun is low behind me. This was taken with my new 600mm lens. As I feared, it was difficult to hold still enough. However, I got a couple of fairly steady shots. (The tripod was busy doing other things.) Ignition. The fishermen are standing in the lagoon several hundred yards offshore. |

Liftoff. I enlarged and cropped this one a bit during scanning. There are a number of pictures between these two. When I watch an Atlas, I always wonder if it's going to expend all of its fuel before clearing the tower. It's a little slow off the pad. |

One of the range safety helicopters, Blackhawks from Patrick AFB, took up residence hovering in front of me during the launch. |
The Atlas 2AS has two pairs of solid rocket motors. The first pair fires and launch and burns for about a minute. They burn out, and the second pair fires.
