Update On My Hemochromatosis
In early 2001 I started having stomach pains and swelling.
Many tests were done and most indicated liver problems. Biopsy
confirmed liver cancer. Surgery was performed in May 2001 which
removed the cancerous portion of the liver. All looked good then
and I was sent home. In late June I noticed blood in stool and a
weakening condition and was taken to a hospital emergency room. I
became unconcious before seeing a doctor, but emergency surgery was
conducted to remove a bleeding ulcer. That didn't stop the bleeding
and another operation was performed and half of my stomach was then
removed. After about a week I started aspirating and since no lung
specialist was available in that hospital I was transfered by helicopter
to a hospital in San Antonio.
I woke 16 days after I had passed out and so very much more was done
to me. I understand I had required 15 pints of blood. I was finally
discharged from the hospital in August. I then required home health
care and physical therapy. All looked good for awhile, but soon pain
returned and more tests, including cat scan. Cancer was again suspicious
in liver. In November 2001 a PET scan confirmed cancer had returned and
was spreading. My Hemotologist/Oncologist told me to enjoy the holiday
season and return in early 2002. On January 3rd he gave me the bad news.
Cancer is spreading and more surgery could not be done and chemo would
be fatal. I asked the doctor how much time I had left and his reply
was, "I am not God, so I don't know." When asked for a guess, he said,
"A year? Probably not. Six months? Possible, since you are a fighter."
Well I am trying to prove him wrong and enjoy each day as it comes. I am
having cataracts removed so I can see more clearly. Miracles do happen.
I do encourage people to watch iron levels and if Iron Overload is
confirmed, to stick by the treatment, because organ damage is happening.
GOD BLESS ALL WHO READ THIS!!
