Tidewater Wireless was formed in 1995 by a group of amateurs who were maintaining K4DA's (formerly NS3F) 145.33 repeater in Norfolk, VA. In 1995, when the FCC began issuing club call signs for the first time since 1978, Tidewater Wireless received a club call sign of KE4YRQ. In recognition of the efforts of the group, the club call sign was put on the repeater. In November, 1996 the club changed its call sign to W4VB under the vanity program. The charter members of Tidewater Wireless had all originally met as members of the Atlantic Fleet Headquarters Area Amateur Radio Station, WA4ZUA, at Naval Base Norfolk. In fact, the repeater equipment now in use on 145.33 was the original equipment K4DA had used to establish the 145.17 repeater at Naval Base Norfolk in 1988. Eventually, the Navy was able to budget funds to WA4ZUA for the purchase of its own repeater equipment, thus freeing up K4DA's gear for establishing an off-base repeater system. Thus, the 145.33 repeater was established. The repeater is the primary focus of Tidewater Wireless, however, other activities are conducted based on the initiatives of individual members.
