LIFE STAR Flight Crew

The LIFE STAR flight crew consists of a flight nurse/paramedic, flight respiratory therapist/EMT-I, and a pilot. Both LIFE STAR helicopters are staffed 24 hours a day seven days a week. In this picture on the left, the flight crew has removed the patient from the helicopter and is going through the doorway that leads into the Bliss Wing of Hartford Hospital. The patient will be brought to a prearranged hospital floor or to the emergency department 13 floors below for further treatment. They are always preceeded by a Hospital Security officer which acts as an escort to the ground floor.

Flight Nurse

LIFE STAR flight nurses provide for the rapid assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of critcally injured or ill patients of all ages frm the scene of an accident, or from referring facilties.
LIFE STAR flight nurses assume the responsibility of sharing knowledge about emergency care systems with other members of the health care team, patients, and significant others in the community.
LIFE STAR flight nurses are actively involved in research that directly relates to improved patient care in the air medical transport industry.

Flight Respiratory Therapists


LIFE STAR flight respiratory therapists perform physical assessments on all patients with an emphasis on their respiratory function. They perform intravenous cannulation as needed, and assist the flight nurse with invasive procedures including airway management.Here is a group picture of the "RT's" in front of LIFE STAR 2.

With the side sliding door open, and with constant communication with the pilot, the flight nurse closely examines the landing zone before giving visual confirmation of a clear area for the aircraft to set down.
