B.Verkin Institute for Low Temperature Physics and Engineering,
The role of the water-ion surrounding in stabilization of nucleic acid structure, including extreme effects (high temperature, ionizing radiation, dehydration). Divalent metal ion influence on DNA conformation and thermodynamic properties, DNA condensation induced by metal ions at different temperatures. DNA interaction with intercalating and groove-binding drugs, including anticancer drugs. Triple- and multiple-stranded nucleic acid formations as models for antigene and antisence strategies. Application of IR and VCD spectroscopy as well as UV and CD spectroscopy for investigation of nucleic acid structure and functions in complexes with metal ions and drugs as well as investigation of triple-stranded nucleic acid formations, their structure and properties.
Comfortable with different DOS and Windows applications, working with Microsoft Word (versions 2.0, 6.0, 7.0, 97); Excel (4.0, 5.0, 97); Power Point (5.0, 7.0, 97); MicroCal Origin (3.11, 4.1, 5.0); LabCalc C2.24 (FT-IR software). Familiar with HTML language. Familiar with molecular simulations (program INSIGHT II 95, BIOSYM/Molecular Simulations Inc.), with molecular mechanics and molecular dynamics calculations (program DISCOVER, BIOSYM/Molecular Simulations Inc.). Familiar with ab initio quantum mechanics calculations in GAUSSIAN 94 and GAUSSIAN 98 (Gaussian Inc.) and with theoretical simulations of IR and VCD spectra based on ab initio calculations. Familiar with programming for WINDOWS (in Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0 programming language) and for DOS (in GW BASIC and Microsoft QBASIC programming languages).
