Physics at a glance
-------------

No fancy java scripts or flashing lights and colours for me
No background elevator music either
Here is one of the last bastions of the HTML purists
We stick to the written word
We shall not clutter it by sights or sounds
Those are for the lazy of heart and imagination challenged.
As Peter, a good Middle Blocker and a friend, put it:
This is about delegation of responsibility.
About trust. About subsidiarity.
It's a small-scale mirror of so many of our every day problems.
But then again, IQ's music in the background could be something
My philosophy in a nutshell
- The most precious thing in life is time; money is there only to buy us more of it;
- Pleasure is subjective and is one's right as long as it doesn't harm others, real or virtual;
- The meaning of life is collecting experiences, educational rather than only momentarily pleasing.
- I would rather risk occasional pain and stay sensitive and open than unhurt but closed.
- Hence: I am a student of life and an avid intellectual/ sensual/ emotional/ physical experience collector. I hope never to be too old for rock'n'roll and always too young to die.
"The question is not who will let me - The question is who will stop me!" - Ayn Rand
A notch down in the BS
- Physics because I am a theoretical physicist. I study nonlinear dynamical systems, polymers and macromolecules, and recently granular and cellular systems. Physics is my first passion and my way of life. If you are interested in this aspect of me you can stop to look up my research interests (which is in need of urgent update).
- An underground physicist is a term that I coined. I believe that these days good physics is done underground disguised as applicable research for funding purposes.
- Interests other than science:
Music (passionately but as a listener), indoor and beach volleyball (played semi-proessionally, now only A-league and tournaments), tennis (I captain the first men's team of my village), chess (ranked, once addicted), backgammon (mostly on the web, e.g., FIBS), bridge, body surfing, Net-scrabble, love (definitely addicted, isn't everyone?).
- Manifesto: Shallow relations/interactions bore me.
Always game for stimulating intellectual/ sensual/ emotional/ humoristic/ physical activities.
- Professional homepage: It is for selected few. Alongside boring stuff about me, my reserach and publications, it also contains anecdotes of my encounters with some really great scientists. I usually don't give it outside my professional circles but you may try to persuade me that you are a special case.
- My music: Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Jethro Tull, Kitaro, Metallica, Vangelis, Jean-Michel Jarre, Rick Wakeman, Gustav Mahler, Melanie, Jon Anderson, Dimitri Shostakovich,
Rare Bird, Alan Parsons Project, Mike Oldfield, Deep Purple, Tangerine Dream, Arena, IQ, Pallas, Irish folk.
- My movies: Blade Runner, Dances with Wolves, Metropolis, The Name of the Rose, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Rollerball, Miss Smila's Feeling for Snow, The Arrangement, The Big Chill.
"I am not one of those who in expressing opinions confine themselves to facts" - Mark Twain
I know the above still sounds nauseatingly into BS. Does it really matter? In fact, if world domination comes to your mind you are right. I am all for it and would like to put a bid on Norway or, if this sounds a little excessive, maybe parts of Cambridgeshire except the bits around Huntingdon that are a little tacky.
