An Active Season?
During the 2000 season, Dr. William Gray and his colleagues are predicting that 13 named storms, seven hurricanes and three intense hurricanes will form in the Atlantic Basin. Gray said it's not due to global warming, but rather is a natural occurrence that fluctuates with Atlantic Ocean circulation changes. One circulation pattern usually lasts between 20 and 40 years. This circulation depends on salinity. When the salt builds up in the North Atlantic Ocean, circulation is faster, the Atlantic gets warmer and there are more storms, Gray said. Today is more like the 1930s through the 1950s, the last really active period.

The Breakdown:
Category 2000 Forecast Average
Named Storms 13 9.3
Named Storm Days -- 46.9
Hurricanes 7 5.8
Hurricane Days -- 23.7
Intense Hurricanes 3 2.2
Intense Hurricane Days -- 4.7
