What Should I Buy?


Go out and spring for a starter kit! This is by far the most economical way to get started in Model Rocketry.

The starter kit gives you nearly everything the first-time rocketeer needs. These kits provide a rocket (or 2), a launchpad, an ignition controller, two or three motors, motor ignitors and ejection wadding for your first launch day. All you otherwise need are scissors, glue (wood and plastic) and maybe sandpaper and a sharp hobby or utility knife.

Estes (and apparently Quest both) have complete packages that require very little work and get you in the air quickly and easily.

For the ultimate in no-hassle rocketry, choose a rocket with a one-piece tailfin assembly. Estes kits with this feature display the logo shown here.

Where can you find them? Walmart and Toys-R-Us are among the least expensive sources for Estes starter kits at under $20. Target stores carry the Quest line.

Here in S.Ohio, Johnnys Toys carry most of the Estes line for the lowest prices I've seen. For example, as of 03/01/97, they had the bulk "Blast Off Flight Pack" of 24 various motors, ignitors and ejection wadding for $24.50 - virtually a dollar a motor!
