Welcome to the Virtual Helium Web Page! This homepage is a private site devoted to the distribution of helium related information.
Did you know that the helium market in the U.S. was developed by the government? That's right... private industry did not want to risk investing in helium production facilities until there was a "market".
Helium Operations (HO) is a government program that conserves helium gas for the future. It was a program formerly managed like a private business that "generated income" for the operating budget through the sale of helium to federal agencies.
HO's address is 801 S. Fillmore Suite 500, Amarillo, Texas 79101.
The program was "downsized" in 1998, re-organized, and moved to the Bureau of Land Management, in the Department of the Interior. About 40 employees of the 200 I served with still remain to manage the helium storage in the Cliffside facility.
Amarillo, has been called the "Helium Capitol of the World" due to it's geologic and strategic location. Most of the world's supply of helium is within 250 miles of Amarillo. Helium information on this web site is provided to inform the public on helium related issues.
