Introduction

This site is intended to provide a resource for information on the European Axis and neutral Air Forces of the Second World War. I hope to be able to dispel some of the commonly held myths about the Luftwaffe and the other Axis Air Forces. I do not intend to go into the technical details of the individual aircraft used unless it's the subject of an essay. As an aide to researchers I intend to annotate my sources for each item, but viewers should be aware that I'm working primarily from secondary sources and my command of German isn't the greatest. I've defined the Second World War era as the period 1939-1945, which excludes the Spanish Civil War and the Sino-Japanese War.

Ideally I'd like to list each unit by aircraft type, strength, and location for every day of the Second World War, as C.G. Jefford, Ray Sturtivant, Philip Moyes, and John Rawlings have done for the British, but I don't believe that such is possible because of the extensive destruction of documents.

Viewers unfamiliar with this topic are advised to investigate the pages covering abbreviations, definitions and organization and structure of these Air Forces before venturing further into the depths.

PS Sturmvogel means stormbird and was the name of the ground attack version of the Me 262 jet fighter.

Abbreviations, Designations and Organizations are explanations of the abbreviations used herein as well as brief explanations as to the nomenclature, organization and structure of the air forces covered. This is mostly incomplete except for the Germans.
Bibliography is an partially annotated bibliography of books dealing with European Axis and neutral air forces of the Second World War era.
Munich is an analysis of the airpower available for use by the powers that could have become involved in war if the Czechs had decided to defy their so-called allies and resist the Germans. Last updated 4 March 98.

Aviation Essays is a collection of articles concerning some of the aircraft used during the Second World War, particuarly the German jets. As a quick aside let me state that Hitler played no part in the long delays in getting the Me 262 into service. The engine was the cause of the problems, not Hitler's order to equip it as a fighter-bomber. I'll explain what I mean when I get my essay on the Me 262 updated and uploaded. Earlier versions of most of these have appeared in The Europa Magazine, Axis Europa and Combined Arms.

Orders of Battle is a collection of Luftwaffe and Axis-Allied OBs for various campaigns and theaters. As well as some unit histories and a letter from a German nightfighter pilot discussing his experiences. Last updated 25 Oct 00.
