It was during one of John Brewer's excavations that he uncovered a set of steps. After clearing the area of debris, he found that the steps led to an entrance into what appeared to be a tomb. Upon entering the tomb-looking chamber, he discovered ten objects that were covered with cedar bark. He uncovered five of these objects, to find that the bark was concealing stone boxes with strange writings all over them. In the room, were two large stone sepulchers, which when opened, each contained the mummified remains of a personage. He observed that one had red hair with the skin still attached to the bones, and that the other personage had blonde hair. The mummies were very large and what appeared to be a man and woman. The man measured about 9 feet in length. They both had strong Mongolian features of the Chinese. They had been covered with a straw-like cloth that he pulled down to examine the crowns and breastplate that accompanied the personages. John Brewer did not take any photographs of the mummies, but did make some ink drawings of them as he looked down upon them. He cataloged all of the artifacts that were in the tomb, without touching anything but the stone boxes for fear of destroying valuable archaeological artifacts. Inside the stone boxes were metal plates, and also included in the artifacts in the tomb were shields and a sword. |
