Cass County Minnesota Cemeteries

These Cemeteries were indexed, "THANKS TO", the following parties involved in the Tombstone Transcription Project- Cecelia McKeig-"coordinator", The Service Learning Group at Northland High School, and local volunteers. They met in 1999 and reviewed materials on a Cemetery Registration Project. Cec McKeig and Mary Welk secured maps and copies of burial permits. The students went to the cemetery and recorded the information on the tombstones and matched it with the official information on maps and permits. They completed the work at the Fairview Cemetery in Remer in three visits and continued the project at Zion Island Cemetery in the fall of 1999. Information was recorded in a database on the school computers and a copy of the database went to the city clerk. Booklets were printed for the Cass County Museum and the Minnesota Genealogical Society. They received sketches of the Zion Island Cemetery (Boy River) from Mary Kibbler (92 years old and sharp as a tack!), and she walked with them through the entire cemetery to point out the unmarked graves and explain the layout of the cemetery. There is no official plat of the Zion Island Cemetery, as it is a private cemetery. The project received a Certificate of Merit for Youth Service projects from the state.
