Sea Otters

You read about sea otters in The Island of the Blue Dolphins. It was a dispute over payment for otter pelts that led to the death of Karana's father, Chief Chowig.

Sea otters can be found in the kelp beds around the Channel Islands where Karana's story takes place. They look like furry, cuddly sea mammals but they are not loved by everyone.

Many people, such as fishermen, think that the sea otters are a nuisance. The sea otters eat an enormous amount of food each day. This interferes with the fishermen's business.

Do research to learn about the sea otters. Find the answers to questions like "How do they live in the ocean?", "How do they stay warm?", "What do the sea otters eat?", "How much do they eat each day?", "How big are they?" and "How do they interact with humans?". You may show the results of your research as a written paper, an informational poster, a slide show or a model.

While you are doing your research, you will find words that are new to you. Make up a vocabulary list of at least 10 new Science words and their definitions.

Here are some resources that may help you with your research.
