Duke Paoa Kahanamoku, the Father of Modern Surfing was born August 24, 1890 at Haleakela.Although he was well respected as a waterman and surfer, his financial situation was not commensurate with his stature. He acted in bit parts in Hollywood films, was a stevedore, and a meter reader, became Sheriff of Honolulu and then Hawaii's official greeter. Duke continued to surf into his 50s, 60s and 70s. He was always in the water, the ultimate waterman. It was written that the only real question for history was how big his legend would become.
