GPPA PUBLIC AFFAIRS COMMITTEE
Purpose: The Communications/Public Affairs Committee has a threefold purpose:
-
To establish a visible presence for psychology in the community
-
To help disseminate information about psychological services to the public at large
-
To educate and clarify the unique role of psychologists in assisting those dealing with life issues/problems as well as the treatment of mental disorders.
Committee efforts in past years have included formation of a Speaker's Bureau, participation in National Depression Screening Day, bookstore talks, as well as dissemination of hundreds of public education brochures. We are in the process of developing a public education calendar and planning for participation in Eating Disordrs Week in February. There have already been an increasing number of calls to the GPPA office and the Board of GPPA has approved funding to hire permanent part time staffing for the office to respond to these calls.
As part of this effort, the committee has been looking at a variety of media vehicles to promote increased awareness in the Western Pennsylvania region of the services provided to the community by professional psychology.
If you would like to find out more about the work of the Public Affair Committee, or if you would like to help with some of the Committee's projects, please call the Chairperson, John McCarthy, at 412-365-1110.
