SADD

SADD Report 1998-1999

This was the second full year that SADD was an active organization in our school. The executive this year consisted of:

President - Daniel Zebeshko
Vice-President - Amie Sapsford
Secretary - Nadya Krutyglova
Treasurer - Carolyn Smith
Publicity - Rona Hachey

Kate Wylie, the founder of our SADD chapter, became a member of the provincial conference organizing committee, Team SGI, and also a Young Speaker, speaking to schools across the province about the dangers of impaired driving.

We had many successful fundraisers and other activities this year to build awareness about drinking and driving. In September, Ms. Melanie Walker, Amie Sapsford, Dan Zebeshko, Carolyn Smith, and Rona Hachey went to Saskatoon for the Provincial SADD Conference.

In October during Drug and Alcohol Awareness week, SADD had hot lunches at noon selling chilli on a bun, grilled cheese sandwiches, and ended off the week with a bake sale. Friday of that week was "White-Out Day", where every 23 minutes, a student is "killed by a drunk driver". The week ended with an assembly and presentation made by Jennifer Robertson from Cutknife. Throughout the week, we also sold T-shirts conveying the slogan "If you drink then drive, you're a bloody idiot", and handed out Red Ribbons to promote impaired driving awareness.

In March, Amie Sapsford, Katy Sapsford, Carolyn Smith, and Jennifer Gobert attended the Canadian Youth Against Impaired Driving conference in Ottawa with 500 other students from across Canada. This week long trip included the conference, tours of Ottawa and Parliament, as well as a meeting and picture with Minister Ralph Goodale, and a picture with the Prime Minister.

March 20-26 was Impaired Driving Awareness Week. To promote this week, we had a bake sale on Wednesday, and had the impairment simulation goggles for everyone to try in the gym at noon. That Friday, we also had a pancake breakfast at the school with the RCMP and ambulance personnel, and a 24-hour wake-a-thon.

Students from the SADD chapter donated their time on Saturday, April 17 to provide a designated driver service for the Emergency Services Ball. We would like to thank all those students who gave up their Saturday night.

On May 1, Amie Sapsford, Katy Sapsford, Carolyn Smith, and Kate Wylie attended the SADD Awards Banquet and dance in Regina.

We are currently getting prepared for next year and moving into the new school.
