THAT'S OUR BOY... M.Ramachandran's
proud parents, father T.Murusamy and mother Muniyamah, give their son a
peck after his 10,000m win yesterday.
Ramachandran was on his way to gold, showing
maturity and confidence to fight off a twin Indonesian challenge.
He did not allow Osias kamlaase
and Hasnuddin to intimidate him.His intelligent run left both the Indonesians
and Myanmar's Gopal bewildered.
He stayed with the pack and sped
off 100 metres before the finish to hit the tape in 30:05.09, a games and
national record.
"I wanted the gold more than anything
else,"said Ramachandran later.
He got more than that.He got the
record too, beating the previous mark 30:07.72 set in Manila in 1991 by
Indonesia's Eduard Nobunome.
Son of a smallhorder from Pagoh,
Johor, Ramachandran was cheered by his family who had driven all the way
here for the race.

M.RAMACHANDRAN ...won the 5,000m in record smashing
fashion.
MALAYSIAN athletes dazzled with
three more gold medals from track and field through a record-smashing run
from long distance ace M.Ramachandran in the 5,000m.
It was a great day for Malaysia
as Ramachandran, Jayanthi and Tong Lean swept all three track golds on
offer yesterday.
Ramachandran inspired by the
presence of his mother who travelled from Muar to watch him run for the
first time in 10 years, ran a tremendous final lap to clock 14:08.97.
That erased the previous mark
of 14:12.66 set by Indonesia's Subeno,and Ramachandran's own Malaysian
record of 14:20.58 rewritten just last month.
Ramachandran left Myanmar's Gopal
and Subeno trailing in his wake for the silver (14:20.33) and bronze (14:20:33)
respectively. The Malaysian, known for his perchant for road races, said
he skippd them this year to get himself into top shape for the Sea Games.
"I was confident of winning and
I wanted to show my family, who turned up to support me, that I was capable
of doing it. This gold is for my mother," he said.
