If the trend of self-censorship continues at its current
rate, Beijing will not have to lift a finger to crack down on us down
after the takeover: Kin-ming Liu
believes journalists must fight for democracy and freedom of
speech. He was elected in June, 1997, as Vice Chair of the Hong Kong
Journalists Association.
In a wide ranging interview the Editor of the South China Morning Post discusses the appointment of a member of the Chinese government as his paper's consultant, reviews the post colonial role of the English language press in Hong Kong and considers the vexed question of self censorship.
Journalism studies continue to attract bright and idealistic
students, irrespective to the handover to
China. Judges at the annual human rights media awards were impressed
by the student magazine, Varsity, produced at Chinese
University.
It is not the journalists who are self censoring
themselves. These controls come down from the top: Terry
Nealon. Terry Nealon heads the English Language News
and Current Affairs at the government broadcaster, RTHK. He believes
that busnessmen with interests in China will attempt to pressure
journalists so as to avoid upsetting Beijing.
