A traumatic childhood event has kept Cat on her mountaintop for the last thirty years. She adores her husband who butresses her against the outside world, and has a lovely home and garden and friends in ther mountaintop college community. Now for the first time, Cat and her husband Joe are to accompany newly married friends on their honeymoon trip throughout Italy, where they will meet in Rome and accompany them to Venice and and then to the hill towns of Tuscany where, Cat feels, she will be high and safe again. Cat begins to come alive in Italy as her husband Joe becomes more uncomfortable with Italy and her own healing process. They meet a celebrated American artist, Sam Forrest, who is determined to paint Cat’s portrait. Cat finds out she and her husband Joe are not the same people that they were on the mountain, which is rather disconcerting to both.

Merritt has been the caretaker of someone all her life-her younger sister, her doctor husband, his children, their daughter, his senile mother. When her daughter runs off to California to stay with her actress aunt, Merritt goes after her. First just a trip to earthquake country to retrieve her daughter, it turns into a more than just a physical journey into the beautiful redwoods of Northern California .
