What is "Presbyterian"?
"Presbyterian" comes from the biblical word "presbyter" or "elder", and refers to the way the church is organized. Each Presbyterian church has a minister and a half dozen or more members who have been recognized as elders. In some congregations, elders serve for life. In Gateway Community Church and a number of other congregations, elders hold active office for a specific span of years. The elders collectively are known as "the Session", and along with the minister are responsible for the worship and spiritual life of the congregation.

In a given geographical area, such as East Toronto, the active ministers and a representative elder from each local congregation, form what is called a "Presbytery". Ministers who are retired, serving at theological colleges, or (MORE ...)

employed in a non-ministerial capacity, are non-voting members of the Presbytery. Often called a "church court", the Presbytery has overall authority and responsibility for all the local churches in that area.

Presbyteries designate ministers and elders to be Commissioners to an annual, national General Assembly held in June. Prior to the actual Assembly, a consensus is usually reached on the election of an individual to act as Moderator. The General Assembly, sometimes referred to as "the highest church court", has authority on some matters, including over the operation of the national church offices. Some other matters require approval from both the Assembly and the Presbyteries. Most church rules and procedures are set out in a document referred to as "the Book of Forms". After the Assembly, the Moderator acts as a national representative for the church until the next Assembly.

What Presbyterians believe
............................................................................................................................
Like other Christians, Presbyterians' beliefs are expressed in the Apostle's Creed. There are some differences in beliefs amongst Christians and even amongst Presbyterians. None the less, Christians share a core of beliefs in God and in the good news of Jesus.

As do most other Protestant Christians, Presbyterians believe that your eternal salvation does not depend upon what you say or do, or upon your works. Your sins, shortcomings, and failures, have already been forgiven, and paid for, by Jesus and his sacrifice on the Cross, and God has accepted that. Your salvation is thanks to God's grace and love freely given to you. You are invited and challenged to accept that gift and to have faith. You can have faith in God.

How should we live out our lives? Like other Christians, Presbyterians believe that
in the Bible we find uniquely authoritative teachings and inspiration for how we ought to live our lives.

Our community -- and Gateway Community Church

The community in which Gateway Community Church is located, is in the Don Valley, south of the Ontario Science Centre, in one of Toronto's densest concentrations of high rises and townhouses. There are no houses. This inner city community includes condominium, rental, and public units, as well as a few senior citizens homes. It is primarily a family community. Indeed, many homes have extended families in them. And it is enriched with great ethnic, cultural, and religious diversity.

People in the community are open-minded, friendly and spirited, cooperative and very dedicated. Gateway (more...)

The Apostles' Creed

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth;

And in Jesus Christ His only Son our Lord, Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and buried; He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sits on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.

Amen.

Community Church, and its members as individuals, try not only to meet the spiritual needs of people, but to fulfill a mission to reach out to and be an active part of the community.

The church, in its 32nd year, has a small choir and church school, celebrates communion monthly, and holds special Holy Week, Christmas, year-end, and family oriented worship experiences.

CONNECT (community activities) - (abbreviated from a Report by Rev. Betty Jourdan)

Connect is an umbrella committee that was formed between Gateway Community Church and Flemingdon Anglican Ministry. These two denominations hope to work together as one Christian presence in the community.

Three programs have started: The Homework Club has approximately 12 to 15 children with three to four tutors. One of the students successfully raised his grade one level on his last report card. This success is encouraging. A Parents' Day Strawberry Social was held in early May with over 25 parents and children; and everyone is looking forward to next year's event. Information Booklet is currently being prepared by a Seneca Nursing Student who is doing her community placement assignment at the Flemingdon Anglican Ministry. This fall, the Connect committee plans to work on three programs: Employment Assistance, Youth Rap, and Quiet Meditation Garden Area.

These programs were made possible through generous donations made in memory of the late Charlotte Sneyd. You too can help by making a tax deductible donation, payable to Gateway Community Church with a notation designating the money to be used for the Connect Fund.

God of my life, I welcome this new day.
It is your gift to me, a new creation,
a promise of resurrection.
I thank you for the grace of being alive this morning.
I thank you for the sleep that has refreshed me.
I thank you for this chance to make a new beginning.
This day, Lord, is full of promise and oportunity:
Let me waste none of it.
This day is full of mystery and the unknown:
Help me to face it without fear or anxiety.
This day is blessed with beauty and adventure:
Make me fully akive to it all.
During this day keep me thoughtful, prayerful and kind.
May I be courteous and helpful to others,

Bless those who are lonely, and who feel their loneliness worst of
all at evening time.
Bless those who are old or sick, or who will not sleep tonight.
Bless all homes and families, and bless those who have no homes of their own.
Give us all restful sleep, and the peace of heart that comes from knowing
that our sins are forgiven, and that we are always in the hands
of our heavenly Father. Amen.

If your computer and browser setup does not support the playing of MIDI files, you might be able to obtain upgrades to enable it. For example, recent versions of Microsoft's Windows 98 Media Player and Microsoft's Internet Explorer 5.0 do support playing of MIDI files. Or, you might be able to use a separate MIDI player like Crescendo or MidiGate.

Some humour - from Rainier United Methodist Church (where there is much more)

A man dies and goes to heaven. Of course, St. Peter meets him at the pearly gates. St. Peter says, "Here's how it works. You need 100 points to make it into heaven. You tell me all the good things you've done, and I give you a certain number of points for each item, depending on how good it was. When you reach 100 points, you get in."

"Okay," the man says, "I was married to the same woman for 50 years and never cheated on her, even in my heart."
St. Peter says, "that's wonderful, that's worth three points!"

"Three points?" the man says. "Well, I attended church all my life and supported its ministry with my tithe and service."
St. Peter replies, "Terrific! That's certainly worth a point."

"One point? Golly. How about this; I started a soup kitchen in my city and worked in a shelter for homeless veterans."
St. Peter says, "fantastic, that's good for two more points. "

"TWO POINTS!!" the man cries, "At this rate the only way I'll get into heaven is by the grace of God!"

"Come on in!"
