"QUICKEN ME . . ."

. . . starting in PSALM 119

Hb. word for ‘quicken’ = CHAYAH2421 = to cause to live; be whole; revive Rt. = to show life. To express greater life than what one is showing at present . . . hence the cry, "Quicken me, O Lord".

Gk. word for ‘quicken’ = ZOOPOIRO from ZOO =live and poiro =to make. Thus ‘quicken’ = to make alive; revitalize; to show life. . . His Resurrection Life.

QUICKEN means to show forth LIFE. (i.e. CHRIST’s FULL life)

Background to Psalm 119. There are 22 sections of 8 verses each: each section is labelled with a letter of the Hebrew Alphabet in correct order. All 8 verses commence with the respective letter of the heading-letter. A very unique acrostic pattern and the whole psalm is centered around 8 descriptions and dealings of the word of God.

  1. ‘PRECEPTS" — Hb.6490= appointed. (i.e. a mandate from God) Rt. word = to visit or oversee). Precepts are then, HIS APPOINTED PURPOSES WITH HIS ENABLING PRESENCE TO SEE THAT THEY ARE FULFILLED IN HIS WAY.

  2. "WORD" — Hb.565= something said; spoken specifically . . . equates with

Gk. RHEMA . . . THE HEARING OF WHAT IS SPOKEN TO YOU. . . requiring action!

Hb.1697= a matter spoken generally . . . equates to Gk. LOGOS. . . THE UNDERSTANDING OF WHAT GOD INTENDED WITH THOSE WORDS.

  3. "JUDGMENTS" — Hb.4941= verdicts. What God sees in a matter and what He has said about such. We are to understand and agree with His verdicts. We do not try to change them or wiggle around them! Like "No excuses!" We must not say, ‘It doesn’t mean that!’ when it just might!

  4. "STATUTES" — Hb.2706= appointment; enactment. Rt.= to engrave. Statutes then are God’s fixed unchangeable methods of achieving things. Things that cannot be changed (not even by fasting!!!) They are willingly engraved upon our hearts. HE chooses the way and the vessels.

5. "TESTIMONIES" — Hb.5713= what others have done. Rt.= to repeat or duplicate. It worked for them and, as God is no respecter of persons, it will work for me also. Testimonies show that it has already happened to some one before me!

6. "COMMANDMENTS" — Hb. MITZVAH4687= a command. Rt.= to set in order.

Remember that Jesus at 12 years of age went to the Temple for His BARMITZVAH ceremony in which He was transferred from Mother’s direct care to Father’s. It was set for Him and us as we desire to come into a close relationship with Father. GOD HAS COMMANDMENTS THAT WILL SET US IN ORDER AND IN RELATIONSHIP WITH HIM. We are thankful to ‘Mother-Church’ for her upbringing but, because we grew, it is time to come under Father’s DIRECT control.

  7. "WAYS" — Hb.1870= road; pathway. Rt.= to walk or tread. THE ‘WALK’ OF THOSE WHO HAVE GONE BEFORE HAS LEFT ITS MARK FOR US TO FOLLOW (a road is made by others who have travelled this journey). Let us learn from those ‘fathers of the faith’ that the Lord brings across our path.

  8. "LAW" — Hb. TORAH8451 = law. Rt. word = to flow. The law was fullfilled in Christ. He paid out the demands of the law by the free gift (grace) of salvation. THE WORD THAT ENABLES US TO FLOW INTO HIM AND WITH HIM. Water of a river flows always progressing to its destination of the ocean. The word will be in us ‘law’ . . . to be fulfilled by us willingly and joyfully through the provision of grace releasing the life of Christ from within . . . the life of Him who fulfilled the law in every point.

Psalm 119:

Examples of where the respective words are used in conjunction with ‘quicken’. Every need bears this response, "Quicken me".

Psalm 119:25 My soul cleaves unto the dust: quicken thou me according to thy word.

Gravity sets in all too readily — the demands of the flesh are so many that my soul, without God’s abiding help, will take the easiest path.

Psalm 119:30 I have chosen the way of truth: thy judgments have I laid before me.

You will notice that in these following verses there is a definite effort to make the right choices because of the desire to please the one we love.

31 I have stuck unto thy testimonies: O LORD, put me not to shame.

32 I will run the way of thy commandments, (what makes up my path) when thou shalt enlarge my heart. (resulting from the increase and release of His life (thinking) . . .Out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks).

33 Teach me, O LORD, the way of thy statutes; and I shall keep it unto the end.

34 Give me understanding, and I shall keep thy law; yea, I shall observe it with my whole heart.

Give me, Lord the revelation that I need today.

Psalm 119:37 Turn away mine eyes from beholding vanity; and quicken thou me in thy way.

Vanity = my own way: let His will and way replace yours in everything . . . everythink.

Psalm 119:40 Behold, I have longed after thy precepts: quicken me in thy righteousness.

Not my righteousness for that would be ‘self-righteousness’.

Psalm 119:88 Quicken me after thy lovingkindness; so shall I keep the testimony of thy mouth.

The testimony of what God has spoken. . . it worked: that’s the testimony I want to duplicate. Meditate on the remaining verse here with the descriptions of ‘the word’ alongside them.

Psalm 119:93 I will never forget thy precepts: for with them thou hast quickened me.

Psalm 119:107 I am afflicted very much: quicken me, O LORD, according unto thy word.

Psalm 119:149 Hear my voice according unto thy lovingkindness: O LORD, quicken me according to thy judgment.

Psalm 119:153 Consider mine affliction, and deliver me: for I do not forget thy law.

Psalm 119:154 Plead my cause, and deliver me: quicken me according to thy word.

Psalm 119:155 Salvation is far from the wicked: for they seek not thy statutes.

Psalm 119:156 Great are thy tender mercies, O LORD: quicken me according to thy judgments.

Psalm 119:157 Many are my persecutors and mine enemies; yet do I not decline from thy testimonies.

Psalm 119:158 I beheld the transgressors, and was grieved; because they kept not thy word.

Psalm 119:159 Consider how I love thy precepts: quicken me, O LORD, according to thy lovingkindness.

Psalm 119:160 Thy word is true from the beginning: and every one of thy righteous judgments endureth for ever.

WORDS FROM THE MOUTH OF JESUS

Jesus was the LIVING WORD that encompasses all of the aspects of the word seen in Psalm 119.

John 1:14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

Jesus - Living spirit-Word took on form (flesh) but maintained His full nature which was grace and truth.

John 1:17 For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.

This equates with a PRECEPT.

John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

Here is a statute and way.

John 14:17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.

The Spirit of God was in Jesus as He walked with His disciples. This same Spirit of Jesus would come at Pentecost and dwell in them. The same Spirit Who is God.

John 15:26 But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me:

A TESTIMONY.

John 16:13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will show you things to come.

guide’ shows a willingness to be led and taught of the Lord. He thus will JUDGE all thoughts.

John 17:17 Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.

John 8:32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

Eph 4:15 But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:

2 Peter 1:12 Wherefore I will not be negligent to put you always in remembrance of these things, though ye know them, and be established in the present truth. A STATUTE.

2 Cor 3:3 Forasmuch as ye are manifestly declared to be the epistle of Christ ministered by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God; not in tables of stone, but in fleshy tables of the heart.

THE LAW. . . followed by WAYS.

(4) And such trust have we through Christ to God-ward:

(5) Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think any thing as of ourselves; but our sufficiency is of God;

(6) Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life.

NEW TESTAMENT ‘QUICKENING’

John 6:63 It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.

The Holy Spirit quickens the thoughts (i.e. = catches your attention before your own reasoning jumps in!) from the mind of Christ. The reception of which will produce a quickening or a further expression of coming more alive in Him.

1 Cor 15:45 And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit.

The whole purpose in the nature and character of Jesus is to quicken you until the last expression of quickening will be to quicken your mortal bodies.

THE SPIRIT OF JESUS CHRIST WITHIN US ‘QUICKENS’ . . . BRINGS FORTH HIS LIFE but because He is TRUTH, then, as the word means, IT (His Life) IS NOT TO LIE HIDDEN.

1 Cor 15:36 Thou fool, that which thou sowest is not quickened, except it die:

QUICKENING IS ASSOCIATED WITH RESURRECTION LIFE. We die to live!

Col 2:9 For in him dwelleth all the fullness of the Godhead bodily.

The word ‘Godhead’ actually means the full Divine nature).

(10) And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power:

(11) In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ:

(12) Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.

(13) And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses;

It is God alone who has brought you from where you were by being quickened . . . made alive. . .when He was back some 2000 years ago. Praise the Lord.

(14) Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;

We are fully released from the ‘ordinances’ or laws that man has tried to live by until Jesus redeemed us from having to do them.

(15) And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a show of them openly, triumphing over them in it.

John 5:21 For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth them; even so the Son quickeneth whom he will.

The ones whom the Lord Jesus quickens will be the ones who really want to be made alive . . . fully alive in Him.

Romans 8:11 But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.

Eph 2:5 Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with ChrisT, (by grace ye are saved;)

This infusion of resurrection life took place at our regeneration and now we are being brought to the full expression of that life. The Spirit of truth will do the quickening.

Psalm 119:30 I have chosen the way of truth:

Let this be your testimony each day. To desire truth . . . it comes along a predetermined course or road to those who choose truth. . . Jesus.§
