In rememberance of
Officer Keith Turner
Officer Keith Turner of the Moody, Alabama Police Department was shot and killed on June 27, 1998 after stopping a stolen car. The occupants of the car were two suspects who had overpowered a Mississippi sheriff who was transporting them to court and had shot and wounded another officer. Officer Turner had called for backup after making the stop, but was shot and killed before any arrived. One of the suspects was arrested the next day by Moody Police and the other was arrested in Mississippi on July 6, 1998. Keith was 29 years old and father of a two month old daughter. He was buried on his second wedding anniversary.
"A Part of America Died"
Somebody killed a police officer today,
and a part of America died.
A piece of our country they swore to protect,
will be buried with them at their side.
The suspect that shot him will stand up in court
with counsel demanding his rights,
while a young widowed parent must work for their child,
and spend many long, lonely nights.
The beat that they walked was a battle field too,
just as if they'd gone off to war.
Though the flag of our nation won't fly at half mast,
to their name they will add a gold star.
Yes, somebody killed a police officer today,
in your town or mine.
While we slept in comfort behind our locked doors,
a cop put their life on the line.
Now their ghost walks a beat on a dark city street,
and they stand at each new rookie's side.
They answered the call, they gave their all,
And a part of America died.
