The question I am most often asked about the insignia above is, "what do the words mean?" Well, the word ichthus [ICQUS] inside the fish is koine' Greek and means "fish". Wasn't that terribly illuminating? The words around the outside, however, explain the word "ichthus". It is an acronym, a word whose letters stand for other words. Each letter in the word "ICQUS" (fish) is the first letter of other words making a phrase. They are: 'IhsouV (Iesous)= Jesus -- CristoV (Christos)= Christ -- Qeou (Theou)= of God or God's -- `UioV ([h]uios)= Son -- Swthr (Soter)= Savior. The phrase, then, is "JESUS CHRIST; GOD'S SON, SAVIOR".

It is more than a symbol for aesthetic beauty, though. In the first two centuries, A.D., Christians were heavily persecuted for their faith and many put to death. Thousands hid out in the catacombs to be free to worship. They marked the entrances with the line - etching of a fish to tell other Christians where they could be safe. So, now you know!
